Service Dog Training

Specialized Program

Service Dog Training is a specialized program giving you the ultimate level of control. Our program is designed for individuals needing a Service or Assistance Dog, that can go anywhere, respond to commands, and provide necessary assistance. I believe that an individualized approach is needed to get the best results while keeping your pet engaged and eager to learn. My goal is to show you how to communicate effectively with your dog while maintaining & growing your bond.

Dog Breeds

I train German Shepherds and English Labradors exclusively for service work. Although I do train other breeds, I prefer to train English Labradors from Daisy Mountain Labs or Graves Labradors.  Getting dogs from these breeders allows me to know the breeder, select dogs with service dogs in their lineage, a health guarantee, and the ability to return the dog if the training candidate wash out during training.

Training Program

Foundations

Whether your dog is a Service Dog or a family pet, our training begins with foundation obedience training.  Each dog will learn to sit, down, walk at your side on a leash without pulling, wait at doorways or crosswalks, jump in and out of vehicles, and provide assistance to you if being trained as a Service Dog. I create an environment that values proper etiquette and reinforces inherent strengths.

Each dog is engaged in specialized training exercises learning impulse control, proper etiquette, conditioning to public places, and behaviors specific to their specific duty. I take the dogs on daily field trips to public and private sites where they participate in drills that simulate real-world conditions and learn to function in public environments. I bring the training candidates on public transportation to teach them how to properly ride.

My Service Dog Training program is unique; the curriculum and comprehensive nature of the training are what makes our service dogs successful at being great partners for our clients. I ensure each service dog candidate adheres to the Minimum Training Standards set forth by the ADI (Assistance Dogs International).

Curriculum

The curriculum consists of 6 subjects to ensure that the service dog has completed training to the optimal level. Subjects include the following:

1. Confidence Training

2. Obedience Training

3. Manners & Proper Etiquette

4. Disability Related Tasks

5. Public Outings

6. Service Dog Certification

Background

I have trained Service Dogs for several types of disabilities. I have trained service dogs for PTSD, Mobility Assistance for both walking individuals and those who are wheelchair-bound, Autism, Downs Syndrome, and Medical Alert.

I am a retired police canine officer whose 20-year career was centered on the training and use of police canines in the upper mid-west. My goal as a Service Dog trainer in the private sector is to help improve working relationships between dogs and their owners.

Each human-canine relationship is different, and I specialize in providing individualized training to ensure the best results for each family or individual with disabilities. Each dog is trained in my home and in the public setting.

My Service Dog program enhances and empowers the lives of individuals with disabilities by providing highly trained assistance dogs, therapy dogs, and service dogs. I do this by providing ongoing support to ensure quality partnerships.
